Staff Spotlight: Heather White
A Team Lead at InVision, she helps the people who work with her provide the best support possible for the people we serve.
What’s your name?
How many years have you been a DSP?
I have been a DSP for 5 years.
How many years have you worked with InVision?
Also 5 years. InVision is my first job in this career field.
In which program do you work?
I am a Team Lead in Residential.
What do you like most about working with InVision?
Feeling valued. Our owner and founder Ruth Siegfried not only cares about the people we support, but also she cares about the people supporting them, and she’s always fighting for higher wages!
What’s your favorite part about being a DSP?
I feel like I make a difference in the lives of the people I help support. It is a rewarding career, and I feel blessed to be a part of their lives. It has honestly made me a better version of myself!
What do you feel is the biggest challenge you’ve overcome as a DSP?
This is a really hard one, because I do not feel as though I have had anything so challenging that I have struggled to overcome it. But if I had to say something, it would be the challenges of finding and keeping good staff who actually care and take the job seriously. But in all honesty, I just go with the flow and roll with the punches. I actually enjoy working overtime, and I have supported several different people in the past five years.
What do you wish more people understood about your role as a DSP?
Our job title is endless! Meaning we are so many different roles to the people we support. I have recently added hairstylist to my list.
When you’re not working, what do you usually do?
Projects around my house. I think I'm part of a HGTV show! [laughs]
You're being dropped on a deserted island, and you can bring three items with you. What do you bring?
An ax for cutting. Matches or lighter. And a volleyball like Tom Hanks had in the movie Castaway. [laughs]
What might someone be surprised to learn about you?
I love HGTV, home remodeling, and design shows. When it comes to projects and repairs around my house, I try to do them myself. If I’m not sure how to do something, I watch YouTube videos to learn. I have built a wood patio and fenced in my yard!
